Cultural hotspot on Zuid - Alderman Simons gives the start signal for construction

17 april 2018

Alderman: 'My heart lies on Zuid.’

Today the official start signal was given for the construction of the cultural hotspot of Zuid for now referred to as the 'Kunstenpand’ in the Hart van Zuid: the future home of Theater Zuidplein, a 'living room’ and a location for Bibliotheek Rotterdam (Rotterdam Public Library). This took place during a festive event at the construction site in the presence of Alderman Simons (Urban Development and Integration) and various residents & entrepreneurs from the project area, plus directors and staff from Theater Zuidplein, Bibliotheek Rotterdam and Hart van Zuid. The Alderman, Spoken Word artiste YMP and directors from the involved parties signed and wrote a short message on so-called pile tips. These 'caps’ were drilled into the ground and now form part of the foundations on which this future building will rest: immortalised in the ground. An extraordinary start to an exceptional building. An open and flexible building.

This new cultural hotspot is being constructed on the site of the former Charlois swimming pool. Theater Zuidplein and the library will soon be offering an extremely wide range of theatre, arts, reading, learning and information in the building, bringing 'dynamism’ to the area from early morning to late evening. There is also space for a Zuid living room: a place for people to meet each other, hang out and enjoy performances.

Hart van Zuid milestone
The 'Kunstenpand' is the second huge milestone for the Hart van Zuid project, following completion of the swimming pool in December 2017. Hart van Zuid, the area development project around Rotterdam Ahoy, Zuidplein and surroundings, is seeing significant investment. The aim is for the area to evolve into a fully fledged centre for Rotterdam Zuid, where people can live, work, do business and relax in a pleasant environment. That is why the entire Zuidplein area will be undergoing a huge metamorphosis in the coming years. Maarten Kokshoorn, Project Director: 'The swimming pool acts as a catalyst for the Hart van Zuid area development, which aims to ensure that people stay more often and for longer in and around Zuidplein. The 'Kunstenpand' will further strengthen this dynamic and will enable Hart van Zuid to flourish even further.’

Hart van Zuid milestone
The Arts Building is the second huge milestone for the Hart van Zuid project, following delivery of the swimming pool in December 2017. Hart van Zuid, the area development around Rotterdam Ahoy, Zuidplein and surroundings, is one of the metropolitan projects that is seeing significant investment. The aim is for the area to evolve into a fully fledged centre for Rotterdam Zuid, where people can live, work, do business and relax in a pleasant environment. That is why the entire Zuidplein area will be undergoing a huge metamorphosis in the coming years. About Theater Zuidplein
Directors Emmelien Matthijsse and Arnold Vollebregt spoke about the future building: 'We are really looking forward to the new building. What started 10 years ago as a tentative dream is now becoming tangible reality. For us, it will be the Hart van Zuid’s cultural hotspot, where many different Rotterdam residents will feel at home. Our doors will be open to everyone who wants to organise something. The building will offer us even more opportunities to develop a performance programme for all Rotterdam residents.’ Theater Zuidplein is the stage of theatre group NU, which offers theatre that touches you. Current themes with real impact. The theatre programme, entrance ticket pricing and high service level are targeted towards people from extremely diverse backgrounds. This enables the theatre to reach people who generally do not visit the theatre. Theater Zuidplein also started the learning/workplace Lab-Z, to develop even more choices for this audience.

About Bibliotheek Rotterdam
Theo Kemperman, Director of Bibliotheek Rotterdam, spoke about the new building: 'It fits in the Bibliotheek Rotterdam policy to work with partners in playing a modest but clear role in an area in which the city is developing in all kinds of ways. As library we are committed to ensuring that through this partnership, but also as independent library, we offer local residents or even those from further afield a place in which they can develop, discover, relax and meet each other. Our aim is that our collections, programmes and the physical space, such as study areas, will form an attractive place for Zuidplein residents and visitors.’
